I seem to spend a lot of time working on setting up backgrounds to my
Lightwave scenes, and it occurred to me it would be nice if it did some of
the grunt work automatically. Like having a "virtual hemisphere" background,
which had the properties of an object (e.g., it could be fogged), and could
be centered on any coordinates. It would act as if 100% luminous (no
lighting problems for image maps), accepted no shadows, and was
automatically larger than your scene. You could give it an image which would
be automatically tiled, or you could specify a zenith and sky gradient which
would be painted throughout. Unlike an object, though, it would not get in
the way of any light sources. I am guessing that such a "virtual object"
might render faster than doing all this manually with a huge image-mapped
sphere (?) If not, it might be easier to just configure a "standard"
hemisphere object and load it when you need it. Hmmm....
